The Classic Tournament, one of the longest running events for the 18ers, produced a lot of excitement on August 4, day one of the competition. Not only did eleven of the sixteen teams come in under par, one player, Daisy Soo Hoo, had an ace. You may read the article about her joyful achievement in this issue of the Rossmoor News. The Classic is classic, as it is a standard four-ball, stroke play tournament where teams of two women compete for a two-day low net aggregate score. Anything can happen in golf so all teams remain hopeful that they will prevail and outplay the field. Leading after day one in flight one are Jayoung Lee and Jane Lee at 4 under par. Second place, tied, at one stroke back are the teams of Claudia Terry and Joan Binnings, and Daisy Soo Hoo and Vanida Nalamlieng. Second flight leaders are Nancy Park and Anna Kim at 5 strokes under par. Second flight, second place is Helen Day and Jenny Kim, and third place is Aisoon Hong and Janet Choi. Third flight, first place at a whopping 6 strokes under par is the team of MaryJean Kidd and Joan Baggett. They cannot let down their guard because the teams of Denise Pratt and Ann Hamilton and Robin Moreau and Pil Choo are only 1 stroke back, at 5 under par: all are excellent scores.
Aside from Daisy’s Hole-in-One, other “money” shots were made by Stella Chan with a chip-in on hole one, Theresa Kim had a chip-in on hole 6, Soonee Kim had one on hole 15 and Lana Yagle had one on hole 16. Birdies were made by Donna Wagner on hole 10, Ann Hamilton on hole 15 and Claudia Terry on hole 16.
The second and final day of the Classic was August 11 and those results will be reported next issue, so stayed tuned.
Upcoming events are the Charm and Eclectic on August 18, the Rules Gala on Monday, August 22 (for all Rossmoor golfers), Casual (invite a man or woman) Guest Day on August 25, and the Club Championship, September 1, 6 and 8. Competitors must commit to play all three days. All women 18ers are encouraged to participate as competition is allowed from the Combo and the Red Tees. The overall Club Champion will be the woman who has the lowest three day, gross score, from the Red Tees. This is a flighted event so there will be winners throughout the field.
The East Bay team will travel to Round Hill on August 16 and play the final match of the season on August 31, at Oakhurst Country Club.
