Club Champion is the most prestigious honor a player can achieve in the Rossmoor 18ers golf club. The winner receives a monetary award and her name on the perpetual trophy located in the cabinet outside the Pro Shop. This is a three-day stroke play competition with the overall winner shooting the lowest gross score over the field. The 2022 competition began Thursday, September 1, with a field of 26 hopeful players. Those wishing to compete had to commit to three days of play, Thursday September1, Tuesday, September 6, and Thursday, September 8.
In order to beat the extraordinary heat predicted that day, play began at 8:00 a.m., one-half hour earlier than usual. As it turned out, this was a very good call as the heat soared to 103 degrees. Another great plan by the committee was to send groups of three players instead of four so everyone finished under four hours.
At the end of the day, one person, Claudia Terry, came out looking very strong with an impressive score of 83. Second in the running is Jayoung Lee with another good score of 88. Third place after round one is Joanne Kim with a score of 90.
Second day of play, planned for Tuesday, September 6, was postponed due to excessive heat and will be played on Thursday, September 8 with the final round on Friday, September 9.
This is a flighted event and leaders in the second flight are Daisy Soo Hoo, Judy Moran and Joan Binnings. Third flight leaders are Laura Kim, Anna Kim and Linda Ingalls and the Combo flight leaders are Lynda Pritchett, Agnes Shin and Jane Lee.
Good luck to all of the competitors.
