On Thursday, Nov 21, the phones were ringing off the hook at the pro shop with all the calls coming in to cancel golf due to the overnight rainfall and the morning’s still drizzly conditions. Nevertheless, 11 intrepid Rossmoor Women’s 18ers turned up to play in the last ladies day tournament of the 2024 season. The “Turkey Shoot” format this year was a two-person better ball. Since so many people canceled, most of those in attendance had to be reshuffled and matched up with a different partner than they’d originally been scheduled to play with. The Rossmoor Women’s 18ers bylaws state that 12 players are needed to run an official competition, but it’s also in the bylaws that in inclement weather, a smaller field of eight players will be acceptable. There was some tension for the early arrivers waiting to see if enough people would show up to have a proper tournament.
Since the normal check-in volunteers were not present, Theresa Kim offered to collect the 50 cent chip-in fee, and once all the new teams were paired up by Jacque Vigil in the pro shop, the brave golfers went out into the elements to battle out their last official round. Two players didn’t complete the round but the remaining nine all completed 18 holes.
There was only one flight with so few players and everyone was a winner as follows:
First place, Xuemei Reinhart with a net 67 (with the help of a blind draw of Joan Binnings).
Second place, teammates Binnings and Sue Yoon with a net 69.
Third place, Sunhi Kim and Cindy Sonstelie with a net 72.
Fourth place, Teddi Swanson and Joel Jackson with a net 73.
Fifth place, Theresa Kim and Sophia Kim with a net 74.
There were no chip-ins, most likely due to the poor conditions, and Yoon shot the only birdie of the day so she won the whole pool of birdie money. Congratulations to all the brave women that played on the last day of the 18ers season.
The final event of the year is on Dec. 12 from 11:30 to 2:00 in the Event Center when the Holiday Party will take place, honoring the year’s top winners. Prize money will be handed out to the Charm winner, the Eclectic tournament winner, the Most Improved Player, and the participants who paid into the Birdie fund. There will be an open bar, appetizers, hot buffet, and a chance to spend time with your golf buddies before the year ends. The new members of the board and other officers will be introduced and there will be a special group of holiday singers performing and leading a sing-along.
