The RMGC held its annual 2-day, 36 hole Stroke Play Championship and Directors Cup Championship tournaments on the Dollar Ranch course on June 15th and June 19th. Both events are Men’s Club trophy tournaments.
The Stroke Play tournament is a blue tee, scratch (no handicaps) event for the club individual championship. Curtis Mitchell, a 5 time winner of this event, successfully defended his title with a score of 75/80-155. Five other contestants accepted the challenge of defeating Curtis but came up significantly short on day one after Curtis’ strong play and were unable to close the gap on day two. Second place went to Brent Atkins, 82/79-161; third place went to Tom Snyder, 82/82-164.
The Directors Cup tournament is a multiple tee, white-combo-gold, handicapped event for the low net (gross minus handicap) individual championship. Player’s handicap indexes are adjusted for the tee box a contestant selects. Player are grouped into foursomes by their resulting course handicap on day one and re-arranged into foursomes by lowest-to-highest scores for day two – just like on a pro tournament. John McDonnell completed this year’s event with net scores of 69/66-135 and with birdies on 17 and 18, won the event by defeating John Newman, 70/65-135 with a back nine scorecard playoff. (note – lowest back nine score wins the playoff). Third place went to Wonhi Woo, 68/71-139; fourth place tied – Mike Kiefer, 71/70-141 & Norm Andrews, 72/69-141; sixth placed tied – Jim Pingatore, 72/70-142 & Bryan Burnett, 74/68-142; eighth place, Simon Park, 75/68-143 (last year’s winner), ninth place went to Rich Scheffer, 69/75-144; tenth place went to Chuck Leong, 72/73-145; eleventh place went to Greg Gould, 71/77-148.
Stan & his Creekside grill team provided a tasty taco lunch after the final round and all contestants enjoyed warm camaraderie as the scores were posted.
Curtis will have his name engraved on the Stroke Play trophy and John will have this name engraved on the Directors Cup trophy. The trophies are on perpetual display in the hallway outside the Creekside Pro Shop. Additionally, each will receive a personal memento of their accomplishment at the end-of-season Men’s Club meeting.
