The Classic Tournament is an annual event where two-woman teams compete in a better ball format over two consecutive Thursdays. This year’s competition took place on May 16 and 23 and consisted of 22 teams split into three flights. The overall winning team can emerge from any flight by shooting the lowest net aggregate better ball score after the two rounds.
Okey Ro and Ki Hee Lee from Flight 2 were the overall winners this year, shooting a spectacular score of 24 under par (120). Congratulations to the new Classic winners.
After the second round was finished, participants gathered at the Dollar Picnic Grounds to celebrate the winners. Lana Yagle, 18ers social chair, and her team of helpers, Stella Chan, Donna Wagner and Maryhelen Greaves, arranged a lovely boxed lunch of sandwiches, snack chips, salad and a chocolate chip cookie provided by A Sweet Affair Bakery of Walnut Creek. Toni Snyder, 18ers Captain extraordinaire, had set up the picnic tables with festive table cloths, and set up all the ice chests with wine and soda. Mark Heptig and Jacque Vigil from the Pro Shop announced the winners.
Other flight winners were as follows: Flight 1 first place, Joan Binnings and Laura Kim with 14 under par (130); second place, Theresa Kim and Cindy Sonstelie with 13 under par (131) and with Kim shooting the lowest round of the entire field that day (82 gross); third place Joyce McCann and Karla Witte with 11 under par (133).
Flight 2 first place, Linda Ingalls and Esta Podberesky with a magnificent 15 under par (129); second place Gail Ramirez and Agnes Shin with 6 under par (138); third place Janet Choi and Jane Lee with 3 under par (141) and with Lee having to play the second day all on her own due to Choi being unable to attend.
Flight 3 first place Marsha Jennings and Robin Moreau with a fabulous 21 under par (123); second place, MaryJean Kidd and Lynda Pritchett with 12 under par (132); third place, Liz James and Teddi Swanson with 9 under par (135).
Birdies on May 16 were shot by Daisy Soo Hoo on Hole 2, Theresa Kim and Ro on Hole 10,
Sunhi Kim on Hole 11, and Soonee Kim and Anne Su and Ro on Hole 16.
Chip-ins on May 16 were shot by Lauralee Barbaria and Betty Cuniberti on Hole 4, Olivia Hsueh on Hole 6, Soonee Kim on Hole 16, and Laura Kim on Hole 18.
Birdies on May 23 were shot by Joanne Kim and James on Hole 2, Snyder on Hole 4, Sunhi Kim and Soo Hoo on Hole 13, Sunhi Kim, Theresa Kim, Jun Chao and Bari Mantel on Hole 16, and Jayoung Lee on Hole 17.
Chip-ins on May 23 were shot by Laura Kim, Snyder and Ro on Hole 4, Bari Martel on Hole 16, and Jayoung Lee on Hole 17.
